Reflections 2018-2019
As I continue to focus on perceptions of life and existence, this series is a continuation of Perspectives from 2017, but it begins taking a closer look at the world we live in. It incorporates imagery from the Hubble telescope to transition from my previous work and as a reminder that we are a part of the vastness of the cosmos, but it also increasingly incorporates elements of the natural world including imagery of Missouri and Colorado, and also nods to my family.
In this collection I also continue my journey over the last five years to break myself from having to use a strict reference to create my paintings. It’s a range of works that explore the balance between using partial references and the lack thereof. I manipulate borrowed photographs by reforming them, and then alternate from using the image for guidance to simply using my own discernment. Instead of being a slave to my reference, I am better able to focus on strengthening my composition and creating more spirited color harmonies.
